5 Things You Need to Know About the Winter Moth
1. Winter Moths will devastate your landscape
Winter Moth caterpillars emerge in the spring, usually around April of each year. They feed on the leaves and buds of maple, oak, ash, apple, crabapple trees and more. Infested trees can become completely defoliated, which when gone untreated, can not only ruin the aesthetics of your landscape, but lead to the death of the tree.
A tree without its leaves is unable to feed itself, thus becoming weak and susceptible to other pests. Cool springs and droughts can exacerbate the damage caused by Winter Moths, which is why it’s important to keep your your trees hydrated and watch for any emerging signs of these pests.
2. Treatment is Crucial
Infestations of these pests cause serious stress on even the healthiest trees. Keep an eye out for these little green inchworms and do not let your trees go untreated even for a season, as they will multiply year after year making them harder to control.
3. Organic treatments do work!
Our Winter Moth spray is made from Entrust, derived from the fermentation of naturally occurring beneficial soil bacteria (actinomycetes) and is OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) Certified, NOFA-allowed, and approved for organic farming. It uniquely combines efficacy with the benefits of biological insect pest control products and has no mammalian toxicity, meaning that you don’t need to worry about moving your car, closing your windows, or moving children or pet toys from the yard before we spray.
4. Timing is everything
Spraying takes place in April through early June and is weather dependent. At this time of year, our small company is visiting 800 properties per week. If you are seeing caterpillars, that doesn’t mean it’s too late to treat your trees, but you can be assured that we are on the way.
5. Prevention is key
Even if you have heard that populations are lower this year than last, it is still important to treat your trees. This year’s application will help prevent next year’s caterpillars.
